A recent headline in the Sarasota Herald Tribune the day after Graeme’s success, “Irishman wins Open” was not entirely correct. Graeme is a Northern Irishman and is fact, British. Graeme did “our Wee Country” proud. It is not often that Northern Ireland gets to celebrate a major sporting success on the world stage. Actually, we have to go back to 1947 when Fred Daly, also from Portrush, won the British Open. Graeme’s stalwart play not only overcame Pebble Beach but he also defied the negativity of the NBC commentators, Johnny Miller and Roger Maltbie who continually downplayed Graeme’s performance and even suggested he could blow up like Dustin Johnson as he started the back nine. As we say in Northern Ireland, “Well done, wee man”. I expressed the above sentiments in a letter to the editor of the Sarasota Herald Tribune. They obviously felt it was not important, as it did not make the paper. How many letters can you print about the Longboat Key Club?
